Closed-end funds vs. ETFs

Published Sep 23, 2026 · last substantive update Sep 23, 2026 · CEF Explorer editorial team (no individual byline claimed)

Both trade on an exchange, but the creation/redemption mechanism that keeps an ETF near NAV does not exist in a CEF.

Exchange-traded funds and closed-end funds are both listed, both hold portfolios, and both quote a NAV. The difference is what happens when demand for shares changes.

An ETF has an open creation and redemption process: authorized participants can hand the fund a basket of securities and receive new shares, or hand in shares and receive the basket. That arbitrage keeps the ETF's price close to NAV. A CEF has no such mechanism. Its share count changes only through deliberate corporate actions — rights offerings, tender offers, buybacks, at-the-market issuance — so the price can drift well away from NAV.

Practical differences

  • Premium/discount is a central research variable for CEFs and a rounding error for most ETFs.
  • Leverage is common in CEFs and rare in mainstream ETFs.
  • Distributions from CEFs are often managed to a target and may include return of capital; ETF distributions generally pass through portfolio income.
  • Fund flows cannot be inferred from CEF trading volume. Trading volume is shares changing hands between investors, not money entering or leaving the fund.

This site keeps CEFs strictly separate from ETFs for that reason: the same numbers mean different things in the two structures.
