Ranking methodology
Universe, eligibility, snapshot consistency, tie-breakers and refresh schedule for the twelve lists.
Universe: active, SEC-verified, exchange-listed traditional closed-end funds with a current price. BDCs, unlisted funds and unverified listings are excluded from every list.
Snapshot consistency: NAV-dependent lists require each fund’s NAV date to be within 7 days of the newest NAV in the universe, so a current NAV is never ranked against a stale one.
Sample rules are specific to each list and printed on its page (minimum observations for Z-scores and risk statistics, 24-month freshness for fee data, 18 months for coverage, full-period history for returns).
Tie-breaker: higher 3-month average dollar volume, then ticker. Refresh: nightly after the U.S. close; price-dependent columns refresh during the session. Missing values are excluded, never treated as zero. Lists never pad to ten.
Independence: no paid placement, sponsorship or advertising affects ordering. Ranking language is descriptive; nothing is labelled “best to buy” or “safest”.
Trending counts fund-page views on this site over 7 days, excluding crawlers by user agent, minimum 3 views. It measures research interest here, not market activity.
