Where to find NAV, leverage, expenses, UNII and distribution sources in the annual and semi-annual reports.
The annual (Form N-CSR) and semi-annual (N-CSRS) reports are the most important documents for CEF research, and they are free on EDGAR. The sections worth learning:
- Financial highlights — NAV per share at the start and end of the period, distributions by type, total return on NAV and on market price, expense ratios, and the asset-coverage ratio for leverage.
- Statement of assets and liabilities — total assets, borrowings, preferred shares, and net assets applicable to common shares.
- Statement of operations — investment income, expenses (including interest on leverage), net investment income, and realised/unrealised gains.
- Statement of changes in net assets — distributions paid, broken into income, gains and return of capital, plus share issuance and repurchases.
- Notes — the leverage facility terms, fee arrangements and fair-value levels of the holdings.
Every fund's recent reports, holdings filings and prospectuses are linked from its Documents tab with the filing date shown.
