Liquidity and trading closed-end funds

Published Sep 23, 2026 · last substantive update Sep 23, 2026 · CEF Explorer editorial team (no individual byline claimed)

Why average dollar volume matters, bid–ask spreads, and the difference between share volume and fund flows.

Most CEFs are small by exchange standards. Daily dollar volume of a few hundred thousand dollars is common, so a single large order can move the price several percent away from NAV. Average daily dollar volume over three months — shown on every fund page — is a better liquidity guide than share volume, because share prices vary from $3 to $30.

Trading volume is investors trading with each other. It is not money flowing into or out of the fund; the fund's asset base only changes through issuance, repurchases and performance.

Practical implications: limit orders, awareness that the last trade may be stale for thinly traded funds (our feed-status label says so), and caution with market orders near the open and close.
